New statement from Iran on 'nuclear program': 'For negotiations to begin...'

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that they are making efforts to resume nuclear negotiations with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany.

According to the Entekhab news site, Araghchi, who is in New York, USA, for various meetings within the scope of the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly, answered questions regarding the agenda.

Araghchi said, 'We are holding meetings with foreign ministers. Our effort is toward the resumption of nuclear negotiations.'

Stating that they could initiate the aforementioned talks in New York if the parties are ready, Araghchi noted that restarting nuclear negotiations is more difficult and complex than before due to international issues such as Ukraine and Gaza, yet they hope that the negotiations can resume.

IRAN'S NUCLEAR NEGOTIATIONS

In 2015, an agreement was signed between Iran and the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)—the US, Russia, China, the UK, and France—along with Germany (5+1), in which Tehran's nuclear activities were regulated and placed under supervision in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

Washington withdrew unilaterally from the agreement in 2018 during the administration of former President Donald Trump and began re-imposing sanctions on Iran, leading Tehran to gradually suspend its commitments under the deal and take a series of steps, including resuming high-level uranium enrichment.
