New war at the doorstep: North Korea fires missiles at that country
During a joint military exercise between South Korea and the US, North Korea's firing of missiles into the sea has led to an increase in the alert level in Japan and South Korea.
North Korea fired multiple missiles into the sea from the country's east coast on Saturday morning. It was stated that these objects were missiles and that some fragments fell in areas quite close to Japan. Due to the incident, security measures were immediately increased in both Tokyo and Seoul.
REACTION FROM JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA
The Japan Coast Guard announced that the fallen objects landed outside the country's exclusive economic zone and did not cause any physical damage to Japanese territory. However, the Japanese government emphasized that the incident threatens regional security and noted that the situation will be closely monitored. The South Korean military also announced that the missiles did not hit their territorial waters but stated that the state of military alert will be maintained.
The missile test took place during a joint military exercise launched by the US and South Korea. The Pyongyang administration views these exercises as a "rehearsal for an armed attack" against it and reacts harshly every time. It is frequently stated in official declarations that North Korea perceives the military cooperation between South Korea and the US as a provocative threat.
Immediately after the crisis, the Prime Minister of South Korea and US President Donald Trump met in Washington. It was reported that the leaders discussed how to restore the dialogue channels between the two countries and those with North Korea, which have been suspended since 2019. North Korea's increasing missile tests have accelerated military and diplomatic activity in the region once again.
While the latest developments in the region have brought the current security risks on the Korean Peninsula back to the agenda, it is reported that the international community is also monitoring the situation closely.
