Five people lost their lives in accidents caused by fireworks used to celebrate the New Year in Germany. In the capital, Berlin, 30 police officers and 1 firefighter were injured, and 330 people were detained during violent incidents.

New Year's Eve toll determined

The streets of Germany were the scene of violent incidents on New Year's Eve. While a large number of fireworks were set off across the country to celebrate the New Year in public spaces as is tradition, police and firefighters were attacked with fireworks in the capital, Berlin. 30 police officers and 1 firefighter were injured in the incidents. Hundreds of police officers from all over the country were sent to the capital to prevent further violence. According to Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath, 330 people were detained in the capital on New Year's Eve.

"WILL BE PUNISHED IN THE SEVEREST WAY"

In a statement, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that all perpetrators "will be prosecuted and punished in the severest way."
