New York Mayor Adams appears in court for the second time

New York Mayor Eric Adams, the mayor of the most populous city in the U.S., appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for the second time regarding five charges, including corruption and bribery. Mayor Adams denied the charges brought against him concerning the acceptance of illegal donations from foreign sources and the concealment of these funds.

Prosecutor Hagens Scotten stated that additional charges against Adams are "possible" and that new defendants will "likely" be added to the case. Using the phrase "We are moving quickly," Scotten said that the investigation is continuing intensely and that there could be new developments.

Prosecutors alleged that they have evidence that Adams attempted to influence witnesses. It was claimed that the FBI reached a witness during the investigation, but that Adams sent a message to this witness instructing them not to tell the truth to the FBI. Prosecutor Scotten characterized this situation as "witness tampering" and stated that it is a significant development in the case.

DEMAND FOR A SPEEDY TRIAL

Mayor Adams' attorney, Alex Spiro, requested during the hearing that the bribery charge be dropped and that sanctions be imposed on the prosecution due to alleged leaks. Stating, "We do not want this case to drag on," Spiro opposed the federal prosecutors' request for more time and argued that the case should be concluded quickly. Spiro requested that the trial be completed by March, arguing that Adams needs to be on the ballot for re-election.

Following the hearing, Adams quickly left the courtroom and got into his vehicle. The mayor, who did not make any statement to reporters, gave an "everything is okay" signal with a hand gesture.
