New York Mayor steps back from candidacy
New York Mayor Eric Adams has announced that he is ending his campaign for re-election in the upcoming November elections. Adams stated that the campaign could not continue due to a lack of funding.
New York Mayor Eric Adams has announced that he is ending his campaign for his next mayoral bid in the upcoming November elections.
In a video statement released on the US-based platform X, Adams noted that he had achieved various successes during his term, such as reducing crime rates, increasing housing accessibility, and fostering economic recovery. However, he stated that he was unable to raise the necessary funds because the campaign finance board did not provide sufficient public funding, which significantly weakened his campaign.
"I WILL NOT CONTINUE"
Stating "We succeeded, but I will not continue," Adams announced that the process he was conducting for his candidacy has come to an end. Nevertheless, emphasizing that this decision does not mean he is withdrawing from public service, Adams expressed that he would continue to work to make New York a safer, fairer, and more accessible city throughout his term.
In the Democratic Party mayoral primary in New York, City Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious on June 24. Mamdani secured 56 percent of the vote, finishing 12 points ahead of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Following this result, Cuomo had decided to continue the race as an independent candidate.
New York Mayor Eric Adams had withdrawn from the Democratic Party due to corruption and bribery allegations against him and did not participate in the primaries. He had later announced that he would enter the race as an independent candidate.
COULD BECOME NEW YORK'S FIRST MUSLIM MAYOR
If 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani wins the election to be held on November 4, he will become New York's first Muslim and South Asian-origin mayor.
