Nikkei: Honda and Nissan to begin merger talks
Japan's leading automotive companies, Nissan and Honda, are preparing to work together to develop electric vehicles and artificial intelligence technology.
According to a report by Nikkei, Honda Motor and Nissan Motor are preparing to begin discussions on a potential merger, aiming to combine their resources to strengthen their positions in the electric vehicle market.
The report stated that the two Japanese automakers are evaluating the possibility of operating under a joint holding company and that a memorandum of understanding to formally initiate these negotiations is expected to be signed soon. Combining the strengths of the two companies is seen as a move to compete with Toyota and Tesla.
According to the report, share stakes in the proposed new entity and other details will be determined at a later stage.
This move serves as a strategic response to the rapid evolution of the automotive industry, particularly in the electric vehicle segment.
By joining forces, Honda and Nissan aim to better compete with Tesla and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, which currently hold significant market share.
The decision to combine resources comes at a time when automakers worldwide are grappling with the transition to electric and autonomous vehicles, a process accelerated by growing environmental concerns and advancements in technology.
