No deal reached at Trump-Putin Alaska summit

A historic summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has come to an end. The two leaders held a joint press conference following the meeting.

Putin's remarks were as follows:

Our talks were constructive and conducted in a spirit of mutual respect. Russia and the United States are extremely close neighbours. Alaska is part of our shared history. Both countries worked together toward a common victory. We have a historic legacy, and that legacy will play an important role in allowing us to move forward between our two countries. We have been through a difficult period — perhaps the most difficult since the Cold War — and that has not been good for either country. The time has come to get on a path and to change that path.

One of the most important issues we discussed was Ukraine. The situation in Ukraine actually concerns the security of all of us. In order to reach a settlement, we must eliminate the root causes of the conflict there.

It is very important that we return to cooperation. I would like to thank President Trump for our joint efforts. It is clear that President Trump is also determined to achieve the goal he is pursuing.

In 2022, during my last meeting with the previous US President, I had tried to convince Biden. I said the situation should not have reached this point, and President Trump told me, "If I had been president, this war would never have happened." I agree with the President's words. Had Trump been president, this war would not have broken out.

Trump's remarks were as follows:

Our great leaders did a very good job. After this, I will be making phone calls. We agreed on many issues; on some issues we have not yet reached an agreement, but we will. We are going to stop 5,000 to 6,000 people from dying every day. We will meet again soon.

(Russian President Putin responded to Trump's words by saying "next time in Moscow.")
