Notable appointment from Trump
Donald Trump, who was elected the 47th President of the United States, has appointed House Representative Elise Stefanik as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN).
According to reports in the US press, Trump announced in a statement that he had chosen Stefanik as the new US Permanent Representative to the UN, stating, "Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart 'America First' fighter."
In a post on his social media account Truth Social, Trump had announced that he would not invite former UN Permanent Representative Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to his new administration.
The 40-year-old Stefanik, a member of the House of Representatives, has long been known as one of Trump's most loyal allies in the House. Stefanik was among the names seen as a potential vice-presidential candidate for Trump.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Stefanik graduated from Harvard University and subsequently worked in the Domestic Policy Council and the office of the Chief of Staff during the administration of former President George W. Bush.
In 2014, at the age of 30, Stefanik became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and later served in the House leadership.
STANDS OUT WITH PRO-ISRAEL STATEMENTS
During a hearing titled "Holding Campus Leaders Accountable and Confronting Antisemitism" held by the US House Committee on Education and the Workforce on December 5, 2023, three university presidents faced pressure, particularly from Republican lawmakers, who argued that student protests on campuses against Israel and the US administration were "antisemitic" and should not be permitted.
Stefanik, who stands out with her pro-Israel statements, aggressively questioned the presidents during the hearings, and following the ongoing pressure, Harvard University President Claudine Gay and University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned in December 2023.
Stefanik, who played a role in the resignation of the presidents, had earned Trump's praise.
