Number of Afghans returning to their country announced
It has been reported that more than 800,000 irregular Afghan migrants, mostly from Pakistan, have returned to their country since October.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the interim government of Afghanistan, made a statement to the Afghan press regarding the matter.
Mujahid stated that there has been an increase in the repatriation of irregular Afghan migrants from various countries since October.
Stating that more than 800,000 irregular Afghan migrants have returned to the country since October, Mujahid emphasized that more than half of them came from Pakistan. Mujahid noted that the other half were sent from various countries, including Turkey, with Iran being the primary one.
PAKISTAN'S DECISION TO DEPORT AFGHANS
Following the Taliban's rise to power, there have been security-focused problems between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Islamabad administration claims that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which fights against it, is positioned in Afghanistan and that the Taliban administration is not taking measures against this organization. The Taliban, however, rejects Pakistan's claims and argues that they have no involvement in the security problems in the country.
While tensions between the two countries have increased in this context in recent months, the Pakistani government had requested at the beginning of October that irregular migrants living in the country without registration, numbering over 1.7 million, leave Pakistan by November 1. It was announced that those who did not leave by this date would be deported.
Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti, Interior Minister of Pakistan's interim government, had announced that over 482,000 irregular Afghan migrants had returned to their country so far.
