Dismissals continue in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) following the sinking of the passenger ship "Filo Jet" off the coast of Kyrenia. In a process that began with the dismissal of TRNC Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı, a decision published in the Official Gazette has now terminated the tenure of TRNC Meteorological Department Director Sinan Güneş.
With the dismissal of Güneş, the number of people removed from their posts following the Filo Jet disaster has risen to 6. Following the removal of Erhan Arıklı from his position as Minister of Public Works and Transportation by TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel on September 2, three officials within the ministry and 2 public employees working at the port had previously been dismissed.
The judicial investigation into the Filo Jet disaster and inquiries to determine whether there was any negligence or fault in the accident are ongoing.
The Filo Jet disaster
The "Filo Jet," a catamaran-type high-speed passenger ship operating between Kyrenia Port in the TRNC and Taşucu Port in Mersin, began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing from Kyrenia on the afternoon of August 30 and sank while attempting to return to Kyrenia Port.
Of the 267 passengers and crew on board, 239 were rescued, while 14 passengers lost their lives. Search and rescue operations for the 14 missing individuals are continuing without interruption. The wreckage of the ship was located at a depth of 554 meters.
