Number of people detained in the UK rises to 1,024

The number of detentions has increased following the violent incidents that erupted on the streets due to misinformation spread after a knife attack on a dance school in the Southport region of the UK on July 29, which resulted in the deaths of 3 young girls.

Police stated that the number of people detained for involvement in the violent incidents has risen to 1,024, and announced that various charges have been brought against 575 individuals.

Among those detained are a 69-year-old person and an 11-year-old child.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Following the attack in Southport where 3 children were killed, some social media accounts and news sites spread the claim that the attacker was a Muslim asylum seeker.

Despite the police announcing that the attacker was a 17-year-old male born in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, far-right groups carried out protests against Muslims and immigrants. The protests spread to many cities across the UK.
