Number of people living in extreme poverty in Poland revealed

The report states that 1.8 million people in the country live in extreme poverty, which accounts for approximately 5 percent of the country's population.

The report indicates that 400,000 of those living in extreme poverty are children, while 300,000 are retirees.

The report notes that approximately 12 percent of the population (4.5 million people) live in relative poverty and struggle to make ends meet, and emphasizes that 3 percent of Poles are unable to afford basic necessities such as food and daily hygiene products.

WORKING IN LOW-WAGE JOBS

In the report, extreme poverty is defined as having to survive on an average of 753 Polish zlotys (5,522 TL) per month for an individual living alone, and an average of 670 zlotys (4,913 TL) per month for someone living with family members.

The report notes that families in extreme poverty need 20 Polish zlotys (146 TL) per day to survive, and emphasizes that the impoverished segment is generally not unemployed, but rather works in low-wage jobs.

The report states that one in three Poles has been unable to save money over the last six months, and recalls that in 2018, around 1.7 million working Poles were at risk of poverty.

In Poland, food prices increased by nearly 22 percent in 2022, while housing rents rose by more than 20 percent.
