Palestinian prisoner dies in Israeli jail

According to a report by the Palestinian agency WAFA, a joint statement was issued by the Palestinian Prisoners' Society and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs regarding the death of 58-year-old Omar Hamza Daraghmeh.

EMPHASIS ON SUSPICIOUS DEATH

The statement, which noted that Daraghmeh had appeared in court today and that his lawyer had stated the Palestinian prisoner was in good health, emphasized that Daraghmeh's death was suspicious. The statement also recalled that Daraghmeh had been held in prison under administrative detention since October 9.

It had previously been announced that Israeli forces have detained 1,215 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October 7.

WHAT DOES ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION MEAN?

Israel's "administrative detention" practice refers to the detention of Palestinians in occupied territories without any charges being brought against them. Palestinians can be imprisoned for up to 6 months without being able to learn the charges against them and while being deprived of the right to defend themselves.

After this period, the detention of a Palestinian who is referred to a military court but remains unaware of the charges can be extended repeatedly for up to 5 years.
