Parliament building set on fire during high tax protests

Kenya's capital Nairobi, as well as various other parts of the country, saw thousands of people demanding the withdrawal of a bill that includes tax hikes aimed at closing the budget deficit.

In a joint statement released late Thursday, five rights groups, including Amnesty International and the Kenya Medical Association, said that police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters in the capital, Nairobi.

Protesters want the government to abandon the finance bill entirely. Opponents say it will stifle the economy and increase the cost of living for Kenyans who are already struggling to make ends meet.

However, the International Monetary Fund says the government needs to increase revenue to reduce the budget deficit and government borrowing.

According to developments in Kenya today, protesters in Nairobi entered the parliament building, and it was reported that a fire broke out in the building.
