Peru classifies transgender people as 'mentally ill'
The government in Peru has officially classified transgender, non-binary, and intersex individuals as "mentally ill."
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has announced that transgender individuals will now be classified as 'mentally ill' across the country.
Stating that the decision was made to protect society, President Dina Boluarte said, "We will treat transgender people who are mentally ill and reintegrate them into society."
Furthermore, according to a report in The Telegraph, the Peruvian Ministry of Health stated that the decision was taken to ensure that "the country's public health services guarantee the full scope of medical assistance for the mental health of the trans community."
The Ministry of Health also noted that transgender individuals could request health insurance coverage in exchange for receiving support on this matter.
On the other hand, these individuals will also be provided with free hormone therapy services.
