Pessimistic words from the President of Portugal: The end of an era is coming in Europe

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa argued that an era is coming to an end in Europe and the world politically, and that we will have to face a deep crisis. In his speech at the closing of the National Youth Meeting held in the city of Aveiro, Rebelo de Sousa warned young people against the "deep crisis that European political systems are experiencing."

The Portuguese President assessed, "Regardless of who wins after the US elections, it will be a different world. The positioning of rising powers in Russia or South Africa, Brazil, and Turkey will not be the same. India will not be the same either. We are at the beginning of a new historical cycle."

Noting that no matter who wins the presidential elections to be held in the US in November, "a different era will be entered," Rebelo de Sousa said, "We are at a turning point in the world. We do not know what will happen in a year and a half. The world, which has struggled to manage the pandemic and recover economically, will no longer be the same after the changes in China."

Noting that everyone has the feeling that transformation and wars are increasing in a period of uncertainty and unpredictability, the Portuguese President pointed out that "there is a much greater need to fight for peace in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and wherever it may be in the world."

Rebelo de Sousa stated that "the gaps opened by the deep crisis in which European politics finds itself have given birth to new movements, and this is defined by some as populist approaches," and made the following assessment:

'EUROPE BEING WEALTHY WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEMS YOUNG PEOPLE FACE'

"The system up until now was designed for the post-World War II period, for Europe's transition, for the 20th and 21st centuries. But it could not adapt to digitalization, energy transition, scientific and technological developments, mobility, the desires of young people, and also aging."

Stating that "Europe has been left behind. Although Europe being wealthy is a positive factor, money will not solve the problems young people face," the Portuguese President expressed that "Europe is still leading the fight against climate change and the fight against the influx of migrants and refugees, but despite everything, it has lost momentum in these as well."

Rebelo de Sousa argued that "there must be ruptures" for the solution of the political crisis in Europe.
