Poland to confiscate vehicles from drunk drivers

The law also includes the confiscation of vehicles from drivers who are involved in any traffic accident and are found to have a blood alcohol level of 1 per mille or higher, as well as those who flee the scene of an accident on foot or by any other vehicle.

If the vehicle the drunk driver is caught in does not belong to them, the driver will be fined the value of the vehicle.

If the vehicle driven under the influence has become unusable due to an accident, the driver will be required to pay a fine equal to the current value of the vehicle instead of having it confiscated.

AIMING TO REDUCE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

According to existing laws in Poland, drivers found to have a blood alcohol level between 0.2 and 0.5 have their licenses confiscated and are subject to a fine of 2,500 zlotys (20,000 TL). If the blood alcohol level exceeds 0.5, the fine ranges from 5,000 to 60,000 zlotys (40,000 to 490,000 TL).

At the same time, a lawsuit is filed against drivers whose licenses are confiscated and who are issued 15 penalty points. The law that came into effect today aims to further reduce traffic accidents.

According to statistics, 255 people drive under the influence every day in Poland. Last year, police caught over 90,000 drunk drivers during nationwide checks, while nearly 13,000 drunk drivers have been caught since the beginning of this year.
