El Salvador National Police Chief Mauricio Arriaza died on Sunday evening after the military helicopter he was traveling in crashed. It was reported that an investigation has been launched into the helicopter crash, which also resulted in the deaths of 8 other people.
Mauricio Arriaza was transporting a suspect in a multi-million dollar fraud investigation by helicopter to the capital, San Salvador. Authorities stated that the helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff.
In El Salvador, an investigation had been launched into fugitive Manuel Coto, a former manager of a local bank, over allegations of embezzling 35 million dollars. The suspect on board the aircraft had been arrested as part of this investigation.
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced in a message shared on his X account that the helicopter crash should not be treated as an accident, stating that he had ordered an investigation to be launched.
