Polish Prime Minister Tusk on 'war': 'Be mentally prepared'

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk pointed out that we are living through the most critical times since World War II, stating that the world must accept that it has entered a new era of war. Tusk expressed that we have entered a period of war, noting that while this may sound devastating, especially to the younger generation, we must be mentally prepared for the arrival of a new era.

Speaking to the press, Tusk emphasized that the next two years will determine everything, saying, "I don't want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a thing of the past. It is real and it actually started two years ago. What is most disturbing right now is the fact that literally any scenario is possible."

Stating that the situation in Ukraine is much more difficult than it was a year ago, but also much better than at the beginning of the war, Tusk said, "Our main task must be to protect Ukraine from Russian occupation and to preserve Ukraine as an independent and whole state."

Regarding Poland's agricultural and trade policy disputes with Ukraine, Prime Minister Tusk stated the following:

"I am probably the most pro-Ukrainian politician in Europe, but I am responsible for my citizens. As the Prime Minister of Poland, I am responsible for protecting the fundamental interests of the country. Poles are paying a high price. No one can compete with Poland in terms of supporting Ukraine. We want to help Ukraine as much as we can, but at the last European Council summit, I argued that the idea of free trade with Ukraine needs to be reshaped. I want a fair deal to be made with Ukraine on this matter."

Tusk also noted that they need a strong alliance with the US while simultaneously being independent and self-sufficient in terms of defense, adding, "Our task is to develop transatlantic ties regardless of who the US President is."
