Political party activities suspended in Mali

The National Transitional Council (CNT), which holds legislative authority, passed the law to repeal the political parties act and the status of opposition parties with 130 votes in favor and 2 against.

CNT Law Commission President Souleymane De stated that political parties no longer align with the current reality and that they would implement a new legal framework.

De noted that the repeal of the law in question does not mean the dissolution of political parties and that the multi-party system will continue.

With the new regulation, the activities of approximately 100 political parties have been suspended until further notice.

The CNT had previously proposed that current President Assimi Goita, who came to power in a 2020 coup and staged another in 2021, remain in office until 2030 and that the political parties act be repealed.

Although the proposal regarding Goita's term in office has not yet been put to a vote, it is considered certain to be accepted.
