Pope accepts resignation of archbishop who covered up abuse complaints

In a statement regarding the matter, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis "has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Andrzej Dziega from his post as Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamien."

In a documentary aired by Poland's TVN24 channel in 2021, it was alleged that the late priest Andrzej Dymer had "abused children" and that Archbishop Andrzej Dziega, the head of the Szczecin-Kamien diocese to which he was attached, had been aware of the abuse since 1995 but failed to initiate any proceedings against him.

Local media reports also stated that Dymer had been found guilty of sexually abusing children by a church court in 2008, and that although Dymer had appealed the decision, his case was not heard before his death.

In December 2022, a Dutch journalist stated that Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005, had ignored child abuse by some priests under his administration in Krakow, Poland, where he served as bishop before becoming the head of the Catholic Church, and had failed to remove them from their posts.

According to a report by The New York Times, the Polish Catholic Church admitted in 2021 that it had received 368 complaints of abuse against children between July 2018 and the end of 2020.
