Pope Francis' doctor describes treatment process to Italian press: 'He might not have survived that night'

Alfieri stated that the Pope suffered from respiratory failure on February 28 and that his condition worsened due to aspirating his vomit. Explaining that the night in question was the most difficult time in Francis' treatment process, Alfieri stated that in such situations, either treatment can be terminated or intensive treatment can be continued despite the risk of damaging organs.

POPE GAVE INSTRUCTIONS TO DOCTORS

Stating that the Pope made the final decision himself, Alfieri said, 'We received the instruction, "Try everything, do not give up." We acted accordingly.' Emphasizing that the patient was fully conscious, the doctor underlined that 'he was aware that he might not survive that night.'

It was noted that another critical moment for the Pope was when he faced the danger of choking on his vomit while eating. Alfieri said that this situation could have led to serious complications in the lungs and sudden death if not intervened in time.

It was announced that the full recovery process for Pope Francis, who was discharged on March 23, would take approximately two months.
