As passenger traffic is expected to increase at airports with the start of the autumn holiday period in Germany, developments regarding aircraft fuel supply at Frankfurt Airport have come to the fore. It was reported that capacity restrictions are being experienced due to maintenance work on the fuel supply pipeline, and that the low water level in the Rhine River is also being considered among the factors that could complicate alternative transport.
According to information in the German press, Lufthansa has requested that additional fuel be carried on some flights arriving in Frankfurt as a precaution against potential disruptions. With this practice, known in aviation as "tankering," aircraft can take on some of the fuel they may need at their destination from the airport from which they depart.
This method aims to ensure that operations continue without interruption by reducing the need for refueling in Frankfurt. However, since carrying additional fuel increases the weight of the aircraft, the practice is carried out by taking into account flight safety, range, weight limits, and consumption calculations.
It was reported that Lufthansa does not expect any flight cancellations under the current circumstances. Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, also stated that it does not foresee any disruptions in operations despite the maintenance work.
How fuel supply will be affected in Frankfurt, one of Europe's major transit hubs, is being closely monitored in terms of airline operations due to the intensity of the holiday period.
