Presidential elections postponed in Senegal: People take to the streets
Police intervened against protesters who took to the streets to protest the postponement of the February 25 presidential elections in Senegal. Presidential candidate Anta Babacar Ngom was detained during the incidents.
A protest was held in the capital, Dakar, against the postponement of the February 25 presidential elections in Senegal. While protesters burned tires and blocked some roads to traffic, police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DETAINED
During the incidents, presidential candidate Anta Babacar Ngom was detained, while another presidential candidate, Daouda Ndiaye, stated that he was beaten by the police.
Former Prime Minister Aminata Toure also said that she was detained by police as soon as she got out of her vehicle and was taken to a police station in Dakar.
DESCRIBED AS AN "INSTITUTIONAL COUP"
President Sall announced in a statement yesterday that the election would be postponed to an indefinite date due to a dispute over the list of candidates, and some opposition and civil society organizations described this decision as an "institutional coup." In Senegal, one of the most stable democracies in West Africa, no presidential election had ever been postponed before.
