Putin’s mediation message for Iran-US war: ‘We will do everything in our power’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan that Moscow is ready to support efforts to end the war between the US and Iran.

During the meeting held in the city of Avaza on the Caspian Sea coast, Putin stated that while Russia is not among the official mediators, they will do “everything in their power” to end the crisis. Putin also described Tehran’s initiatives to end the war as “sincere.”

Pezeshkian, for his part, stated that an exchange of proposals is ongoing to end the war between Iran and the US and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to navigation. Stating that Tehran is making changes to the proposals, Pezeshkian expressed that they aim to reach an agreement on a common text through mediators.

We are talking, but every time we negotiate with the US, they attack again. Despite this, we will not leave the negotiating table or abandon dialogue.

— Masoud Pezeshkian

The Iranian President stated that after the changes to the proposals are completed, they will be presented to the current mediators, adding, “We need to come together through the current mediators and reach an agreement on the proposals.”

MOSCOW IS NOT AN OFFICIAL MEDIATOR

Russia does not hold the position of an official mediator in the US-Iran negotiations. So far, Qatar and Pakistan have led the process. However, Putin’s statement has brought to the agenda Moscow’s search for a role in the diplomatic process through its deepening relations with Tehran.

This meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian was the seventh contact between the two leaders since the Iranian President took office. Regional developments and Iran-US negotiations were also discussed in a phone call between the two leaders on October 7, on Putin’s birthday.

Military, diplomatic, and economic relations between Moscow and Tehran have strengthened further since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It is reported that Iran provides Shahed-type drone technology and short-range missiles to Russia, and that Moscow develops Geran-type UAVs based on this technology.

During the meeting, Putin said that the trade volume between the two countries increased by more than 21 percent in 2025 and that a similar trend continued in the first seven months of 2026. Pezeshkian stated that the current conditions offer an opportunity to accelerate Russia-Iran cooperation.

In reports in Iranian state media prior to the meeting, it was claimed that Russia was ready to provide a 1 billion dollar loan to Tehran. However, it was reported that there were disagreements among Iranian institutions regarding the areas in which the money would be used, which delayed the transfer process.
