Quota reserved for Turkmens and Christians in KRG parliament cancelled
The Iraqi Federal Court has cancelled the 11-seat quota reserved for Turkmens and Christians in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) parliament.
The Iraqi Federal Court, following an examination prompted by an appeal from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), has ruled that the 11-seat quota reserved for Turkmens and Christians in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) parliament is "unconstitutional."
11-SEAT QUOTA CANCELLED
According to the decision taken by the court, the 11-seat quota in the KRG parliament—comprising 5 seats for Turkmens, 5 for Christians, and 1 for Armenians—has been cancelled, reducing the total number of seats in the parliament from 111 to 100.
The court, which also decided to divide the KRG into four electoral districts, ruled that the elections scheduled to be held in the KRG this year should be conducted by the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq until the KRG's own Independent High Commission for Elections and Referendum is established.
