Reactions continue to Trump's tariff decision
Eight European countries, led by Denmark, have taken a joint stance against US President Donald Trump's moves regarding Greenland and his decision to impose tariffs.
US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and the UK following disagreements over the Greenland issue has caused concern in Europe. In a joint statement, these eight countries pointed out that the new customs measures would cause a serious shake-up in transatlantic relations.
The statement underscored a firm solidarity within the NATO framework for the security of the Arctic region. The joint text emphasized that the "Arctic Endurance" military exercise to be held in Greenland was planned in advance and that these activities do not contain any threats toward anyone. The statement, which included the phrase "We are in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland," noted that they favor a constructive dialogue focused on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
'WE ARE DETERMINED TO PROTECT OUR SOVEREIGNTY'
The eight countries warned that the tariffs decided by Trump could damage transatlantic ties and trigger a dangerous spiral of tension. The statement included the words, "Tariff threats are weakening transatlantic relations and creating the risk of a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to respond by standing in unity and coordination. We are determined to protect our sovereignty."
In a statement on January 17, Trump had said that economic sanctions would be imposed on European countries that opposed the purchase of Greenland by the US. Accordingly, a 10 percent tariff is planned to be introduced on the exports of the eight countries in question to Greenland starting February 1, 2026, and this rate is planned to be increased to 25 percent starting June 1, 2026. The US President stated that this practice would remain in effect until the desired agreement on Greenland is reached.
