According to a report by the Japanese agency Kyodo, the card, which was released in 1998, features "Pikachu," one of the most well-known characters from the animated series. The card, which sold for 360 thousand dollars at the auction house Sotheby's in New York, is one of only 39 official copies.
Sotheby's also announced that the card bears the signature of Takumi Akabane, one of the founders of the Pokemon trading card game.
Information regarding the identity of the seller and the new owner of the card was not provided.
The 39 cards in question were distributed in 1998 to the winners of an illustration contest organized by the Japanese magazine "CoroCoro Comic."
