Remarkable trade after Assad: Imports of this product increased 7-fold

Foreign trade data for December 2024, the month in which the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria was overthrown by jihadist groups led by HTS, contains remarkable details.

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), Turkey's exports to Syria increased by 33 percent compared to the same month last year, rising to 233.7 million dollars. One of the most striking items within this increase was the export of money counting machines.

MONEY COUNTING MACHINE EXPORTS MULTIPLIED

The export of money counting machines from Turkey to Syria, which was 580 kilograms in December of last year, increased by 624 percent in the same period this year, reaching 4 tons and 199 kilograms.

Previously, Turkey's exports were largely directed toward regions in the north of the country under the control of jihadist groups and the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). Since the Turkish Lira is widely used in these regions, there was a high demand for money counting machines. However, the depreciation of the TL had further increased this need.

Nevertheless, with the change of power in Damascus in December, Turkey's exports to all of Syria gained momentum. It is stated that money counting machines are also being sent to the country for the Syrian Lira, which has lost significant value due to the war.
