Report released: Number of victims abused by Catholic Church officials revealed

According to the report prepared by the Network of Abuse Victims, the details of which were shared at a press conference today, a total of 1,570 people in Italy—192 women and 1,378 men—have been victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy or employees of the Catholic Church over the last 15 years.

The report stated that the abusers included 330 priests, 1 nun, and 29 church staff members.

The Network of Abuse Victims Association noted that these figures are based on publicly available documents.

Francesco Zanardi, President of the Network of Abuse Victims, stated during the presentation of the report that 956 additional victims, as reported by the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), should be added to the figures recorded by their association in this report.

Zanardi said the situation is alarming due to both the high number of cases and the impossibility of preventing new victims from emerging.
