Resignation earthquake in Greece's main opposition party SYRIZA: Number of MPs continues to fall...
Four members of parliament have resigned from Greece's main opposition party, the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA). Following the resignations, SYRIZA's number of seats in parliament has dropped to 31, leaving it tied with PASOK for second place in the parliamentary rankings.
According to reports from the Greek state broadcaster ERT, the Alliance's number of seats in parliament has fallen to 31 after 4 MPs resigned from SYRIZA due to disagreements with party leader Stefanos Kasselakis.
SYRIZA was the main opposition party with 35 MPs, following the ruling New Democracy party, which is represented by 156 MPs in the 300-seat Greek Parliament.
PASOK, which holds 31 seats in the assembly, was the third-largest party in terms of seat count. Following the resignations, the number of MPs for PASOK and SYRIZA has become equal.
SYRIZA, which earned the right to be represented by 47 MPs in the general elections held in June 2023, saw its number of seats in parliament fall to 36 in 2023 after 11 MPs resigned from the party.
In July, this number fell to 35 after 1 MP was expelled from SYRIZA.
