Russia reacts to France's 'nuclear bomber' plan

A notable statement has come from Russia regarding France's plan to deploy nuclear-capable strategic bombers to European countries.

In a statement to the press, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko underscored Moscow's concern regarding the deployment of these bombers to European countries other than France.

Describing the situation as an "uncontrolled buildup of NATO's nuclear potential," Grushko said, "Obviously, our military will have to take this into account when updating the list of priority targets in the event of a potential major conflict. Consequently, contrary to France's claims of strengthening its allies' defense, no absolute guarantees are being offered to these countries. The security of these countries is actually being undermined."

Grushko also spoke about the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, known as "New START," which limits nuclear weapons between the US and Russia and expired last February. The Deputy Minister stated that any future dialogue on nuclear weapons must take into account the combined capabilities of NATO and the US, including the arsenals of France and the UK.

France's nuclear goals

French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans in March to expand his country's nuclear arsenal and increase its deterrence. In this context, the French leader said that nuclear-capable fighter jets could be temporarily deployed on the territories of various European partners.

Macron noted that within this framework, the Paris administration has been holding talks with the UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark.
