Russia scrambles jet against British warplanes
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a Russian Su-27 fighter jet was scrambled after detecting two British Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets and one RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea.
In a statement from the ministry, it was stated that Russian airspace control systems detected a group of aerial targets approaching the border of the Russian Federation over the Black Sea.
Noting that a Su-27 fighter jet from the Russian air defense forces was scrambled to identify the aerial targets and prevent a border violation, the statement said, "The crew of the Russian fighter jet identified the aerial targets as a pair of (Eurofighter) Typhoon fighter jets and one RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft belonging to the British Air Force. As the Russian fighter jet approached, the British aircraft turned back from the state border of the Russian Federation."
The statement, which noted that the Russian aircraft returned safely to its home base and did not allow the border to be violated, added, "The flight of the Russian fighter jet was carried out in full compliance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters and safety measures."
