Russia strikes grain ship bound for Egypt

As clashes intensify on the Moscow-Kyiv front, Russia has launched a new attack from the sea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a Russian missile struck an Egyptian-flagged civilian ship carrying grain.

Zelenskyy stated that the ship, which had departed from Ukrainian territorial waters, was en route to Egypt. 

The Reuters news agency reported that the ship was struck in Romanian waters near the Danube River in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian Navy also confirmed in a statement that the grain ship was not in Ukrainian waters when it was hit. A navy spokesperson told Reuters that Russia used TU-22 missiles in the attack. 

However, the Romanian Navy reported that the ship was not in Romanian waters at the time it was struck. 

'ATTACK VIOLATES GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY'

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Russia's "brazen" attack violates freedom of navigation and global food security.

Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy stated in a post on social media that there were no casualties in the incident.

Continuing his post, Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine's food shipments to African and Middle Eastern countries are important, adding, "We will continue to strive to protect our ports, the Black Sea, and our food exports to global markets. Grain and food security should never be the target of missiles."
