According to a document published on the Russian government's website on Sunday, Vladimir Putin has signed a decree calling up 150,000 citizens for mandatory military service.
All men in Russia are required to perform one year of military service starting from the age of 18, provided they are not continuing their education.
In July, the 'Duma', the lower house of the Russian Parliament, approved a law proposing to raise the maximum age for conscription from 27 to 30. The new law came into effect on January 1, 2024.
Mandatory military service has long been a sensitive issue in Russia; many men go to great lengths to avoid receiving their conscription papers during the twice-yearly call-up periods.
New conscripts cannot legally be deployed to fight outside of Russia, and they were exempted from the limited mobilization in 2022, which called up at least 300,000 men with prior military training to fight in Ukraine. However, some soldiers were mistakenly sent to the front lines.
In September, he had signed an order to mobilize 130,000 people.
