Russia to pay compensation to Azerbaijan
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Tajikistan that Russia will pay compensation for the Azerbaijani aircraft it shot down.
During the meeting held in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, Putin and Aliyev held a detailed discussion regarding the plane crash that occurred in December 2024.
According to the statement made by the Kremlin, Putin recalled that he had conveyed his apologies to Aliyev following the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
Stating that the investigation is nearing completion, Putin indicated that the accident was related to several factors. He explained that the incident occurred due to Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles crossing the Russian border and technical malfunctions in the Russian air defense system. Putin said, "The missiles fired did not hit the plane directly, but exploded nearby and caused damage."
Putin stated that everything necessary regarding compensation would be done and that the officials involved in the incident would be evaluated legally. "In this tragic event, we aim to provide financial and moral support to the families," he added.
Azerbaijani President Aliyev thanked Putin for providing detailed information. Following the incident, it was recorded that the Embraer 190 type aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines experienced a hydraulic system failure while flying in Russian airspace and crashed while diverting to Aktau. Aliyev had previously stated that the crash occurred as a result of being accidentally shot down by Russia.
