Russia: We will respond to Ukraine's long-range weapon attacks on Russian territory

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov held a press conference following the G20 Leaders' Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Evaluating the claims that the US has authorized the use of long-range weapons supplied to Ukraine on Russian territory, Lavrov pointed out that the White House and the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) have not yet confirmed this information.

Pointing out that the Ukrainian army carried out an attack on the Russian region of Bryansk with American-made Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), Lavrov said, "The repeated use of ATACMS missiles during the night in attacks on the border region of Bryansk is a signal that the West wants to escalate tensions. It is impossible to use these high-tech missiles without American assistance. We will consider this a new phase in the West's war against Russia and will respond accordingly."

Stating that Russia's nuclear doctrine has been updated and that he hopes this doctrine will be taken into account in the West, Lavrov said, "We believe that nuclear weapons are, first and foremost, a means of deterrence and preventing nuclear war. This is the approach we take to this situation."

Recalling that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously stated that he did not want to provide "Taurus" missiles to Ukraine, Lavrov noted that "this was a responsible approach."

THE EVENT

In a report by the American newspaper The Washington Post (WP) citing two senior US officials, it was stated that the US administration had granted permission to Ukraine to use the long-range ATACMS missiles it provided in a limited manner on Russian territory.

The Russian Ministry of Defense had reported that Ukraine carried out an attack on the Russian region of Bryansk at night with American-made long-range ATACMS missiles.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also approved the doctrine today that allows for a nuclear response if his country is subjected to ballistic missile attacks.
