Sabotage attack in France hours before the opening of the Olympic Games

France's largest railway company, SNCF, announced that a "major attack" was carried out on the train infrastructure on Friday morning.

The attack caused numerous train routes to be diverted and led to cancellations.

In a statement on its social media account, SNCF said, "We ask all passengers to postpone their journeys and not to go to the stations."

The attack is expected to plunge the transportation system into chaos on the first day of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

An SNCF spokesperson stated to DW that the attack was carried out as an act of "arson."

ONE PERSON HAD BEEN DETAINED

It was reported in recent days that after French police detained an 18-year-old on suspicion of planning an attack, another person of the same age was also detained for the same reason.

According to reports in the national press, another 18-year-old was detained in the southern French department of Gironde, where strict security measures have been implemented due to the Olympic Games, which are expected to draw nearly 16 million visitors, on suspicion of planning an attack.
