Sakurajima Volcano in Japan erupts

According to a report by The Japan Times, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that ash rose up to 5,000 meters following the eruption at the Sakurajima Volcano in the south of the country.

It was reported that there were no deaths or injuries following the eruption, and no damage was detected to surrounding buildings.

The Kagoshima Meteorological Office also announced in a statement that the volcanic activity warning level is being maintained at level 3, which includes the recommendation that "the public should not approach the volcano."

Sakurajima is known as Japan's most active volcano, and since February 2016, approaching within 2 kilometers of the crater has been prohibited.

The peninsula where the volcano is located was once a separate island within Kagoshima Bay, but it merged with the Osumi Peninsula after the lava filled the eastern coastline following a major volcanic eruption in 1914.

That eruption was recorded as the largest volcanic eruption in Japanese history.
