Scholz calls for a political solution to the conflict in Syria

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in a statement made at the Chancellery regarding the developments in Syria, said, "The Syrian people have suffered greatly under the (Bashar) Assad regime in recent years. Today, we stand with all Syrians who are full of hope for a free, fair, and secure Syria."

Noting that Assad has been ruthlessly and violently oppressing his own people for over 10 years, Scholz said that most people in Syria have concerns alongside their hopes.

Scholz stated, "They are wondering what will happen now. After all, there are also radical and extremist forces among the resistance fighters. What is important right now is that Syria can live in law and order as soon as possible and that law and order are established there."

Emphasizing that all religious communities, ethnic groups, and minorities must be protected, Scholz stated that all Syrians should be given the opportunity to live with dignity and determine their own destiny.

Scholz used the expression, "We will evaluate the next Syrian government in this way."

Pointing out that Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty are of vital importance, Scholz noted the following:

"No country is the backyard of another; illegitimate interventions by third parties must end, and Syria must live in peace with its neighbors. A comprehensive national dialogue, an orderly and peaceful transition process, and ultimately finding a political solution to the conflict in Syria are possible. Germany, together with its international partners and on the basis of United Nations Security Council resolutions, will contribute to this."
