On Friday, schools in the US city of Springfield were evacuated for the second consecutive time. According to US media, the schools were closed due to bomb threats that followed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's claims that immigrants were eating pets.
Despite the Springfield municipal government and police stating that there have been no credible reports of immigrants eating pets and no evidence that pets have been harmed by immigrants, tensions in the city are rising.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced that it is also investigating threat messages sent to a local association belonging to Haitians in Springfield.
The city's mayor, Rob Rue, stated to CNN that all pets and their owners should feel safe in Springfield, but that the threats against schools and Haitians are serious.
TRUMP HAD SAID 'IMMIGRANTS ARE EATING CATS' ON LIVE TELEVISION
Last week, some US citizens in the city of Springfield had claimed that immigrants were 'eating' pets.
Later, J.D. Vance, whom Trump nominated as his vice-presidential running mate, shared the claims on his social media account, asserting that what was being said was true.
Donald Trump also voiced these claims during the debate program he participated in with the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris last Tuesday (September 10), stating that 'immigrants are eating cats.'
