Secret Service allegedly identified suspect as 'suspicious' before Trump assassination attempt
It has been alleged that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspect who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, was identified as a suspicious person by law enforcement more than an hour before he opened fire.
Wyoming Republican Senator John Barrasso made statements to Fox News following a briefing provided to Senators by the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service.
Barrasso stated that Crooks had been "identified as a suspicious character" by security teams more than an hour before carrying out the attack because he was "carrying a backpack and a rangefinder."
"So you would think that you would not lose sight of the individual for that hour," said Barrasso, noting that security personnel should have tracked such suspicious individuals, but there was no evidence that such a thing had occurred.
Calling for the resignation of U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, Barrasso said, "The American people should not feel comfortable about this. This is a total failure on behalf of the Secret Service. We need a change at the very top."
Tennessee Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn, who attended the same briefing, also shared on her X social media account, "I just left a briefing with the Secret Service and the FBI. I am appalled to learn that the Secret Service was aware of a threat before Trump took the stage."
Blackburn also called for the Secret Service Director to resign, writing, "I do not have confidence in Director Cheatle's leadership and believe it is in the best interest of our nation for her to step down."
ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON TRUMP
Former U.S. President Trump was subjected to an armed attack on July 13 while addressing supporters from a podium at a rally in the Butler area of Pennsylvania. One person attending the rally died in the attack, two people were injured, and the U.S. Secret Service announced that the attacker had been neutralized.
The FBI defined the attack as an assassination attempt and, following investigations, reported that the person who carried out the assassination attempt and was killed at the scene was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
