Sentencing hearing in Trump's trial postponed indefinitely
Judge Juan Merchan, presiding over the "hush money" case against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, has postponed the sentencing hearing indefinitely.
A new decision has been announced in the historic "hush money" trial of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the case, announced that the sentencing hearing has been postponed without specifying a new date. In a one-page order issued today, Merchan stated that Trump's lawyers must submit their defense for the dismissal of the case "by the close of business on December 2."
Trump's lawyers had requested that Judge Merchan dismiss the case, arguing that dismissal was necessary to "facilitate the orderly transition of executive power." Trump's attorneys, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, stated, "Just as a sitting president is completely immune from any criminal process, President Trump, as president-elect, is also immune."
The prosecution, meanwhile, told Judge Merchan that there are paths he could take other than a complete dismissal of the case, including "staying all remaining criminal proceedings until the end of the defendant's upcoming presidential term."
TRUMP'S HUSH MONEY TRIAL
On May 31, a 12-person jury found Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a "hush money" payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. Trump, who made history as the first former U.S. president to be convicted by a jury in a criminal trial, had announced that he would appeal the verdict after his sentencing was announced.
