Sexually transmitted diseases in the EU are spreading faster: Figures are just the tip of the iceberg

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has warned of a "troubling" increase in the number of cases of sexually transmitted infections in Europe.

The Annual Epidemiological Report published by the ECDC revealed findings for the year 2022 for European Union member states and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway).

According to the report, there was a 'disturbing' and 'significant' increase in cases of bacterial infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia across the EU/EEA compared to 2021. The report states that gonorrhea cases increased by 48% and syphilis cases by 34%, while chlamydia cases decreased by 16%.

ECDC Director Andrea Ammon suggested expanding access to sexual health education, testing, and treatment services, and combating the stigma associated with sexually transmitted infections as ways to address the issue.

Speaking at a media conference, Ammon said, "Unfortunately, the figures paint a clear picture that requires urgent attention and action."

Ammon further stated, "These figures likely represent only the tip of the iceberg, as the true extent of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia may be underestimated due to differences in surveillance data, testing practices, access to sexual health services, and reporting practices across the region."

The report notes that sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are treatable, but if left untreated, they can lead to serious complications such as chronic pain and infertility.

Cases of sexually transmitted infections have been rising in the EU for years. The report notes that pandemic measures implemented in 2020 and 2021 reduced the spread of infections, but by 2022, a sharp rise was observed compared to previous periods.
