She had settled in the US in 1964: Juanita Castro, sister of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, has passed away
Juanita Castro, sister of the leader of the Cuban Revolution and former President Fidel Castro, has passed away in Miami at the age of 90.
According to a report by the Univision website, Juanita Castro, who had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Miami for some time, has passed away at the age of 90.
In a statement made by family members, it was reported that Juanita Castro died of natural causes and that the funeral ceremony would be held privately among the family.
Author Maria Antonieta Collins, who penned Juanita Castro's memoirs, stated, "Today, Juanita Castro has departed before us on the path of life and death; she was an extraordinary woman and a tireless fighter for the cause of Cuba, which she loved so dearly."
Castro, who fell out with her brothers Fidel and Raul over the Cuban Revolution, left her country in 1964 and settled in Miami, USA.
Castro, who collaborated with the US intelligence agency CIA under the pseudonym "Donna," had "openly" condemned the administration of Cuban revolution leader Fidel Castro and Raul Castro.
In a statement she made years ago, Juanita Castro had said, "Undoubtedly, I have suffered more than other people in exile because they did not let me breathe on either side of the Florida Straits, and very few people understand the paradox of my life. For those in Cuba, I am a defector because I left and condemned the current regime. For many people in Miami, I was declared persona non grata because I am the sister of Fidel and Raul."
