Ship collision in China: 21 sailors, including 16 Turks, rescued

According to a statement made by the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs, a collision occurred off the coast of Shanghai, China, between the Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier OMEGA, owned by the Ankara-based Gamma Denizcilik, and a ship named MIRABELLA.

The OMEGA sank as a result of the collision, but all 21 sailors on board, 16 of whom are Turkish, were rescued via a lifeboat.

The Directorate General of Maritime Affairs stated that, as a result of discussions held with the Shanghai MRCC through the Main Search and Rescue Coordination Center (AAKK), it was learned that the OMEGA sank following the collision and that the crew abandoned the ship using a lifeboat and were picked up from the sea. It was reported that contact was established with the ship's Third Officer and that the crew members are in good health.

Furthermore, the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs announced that coordination regarding the health status of the evacuated sailors is being maintained with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MRCC China. It was stated that an investigation into the incident has been launched. The statement, which included well wishes for those involved, did not provide further details regarding the specifics of the incident.
