Shohrat Order for Aziz Sancar from Azerbaijan: Aliyev signs special decree

Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar has been awarded the Shohrat Order (Order of Glory) by a special decree signed by President of Azerbaijan İlham Aliyev. The decision was based on Sancar's special contributions to the strengthening of international scientific and humanitarian cooperation.

The announcement of the decision around the time of Sancar's 80th birthday—he was born on September 8, 1946—was considered particularly meaningful by his family and the scientific community.

Orhan Sancar, Aziz Sancar's nephew and CIS Countries Coordinator for Pegas Touristik, described the award decision as "a strong indicator of Turkey-Azerbaijan brotherhood and the value placed on science."

In his statement, Orhan Sancar said, "Today is a day full of pride and extremely meaningful for all of us. The fact that my uncle Aziz's contributions to international scientific and humanitarian cooperation are honored with such a high order is a great source of pride for our family, as well as for Turkey and the entire Turkic world."

Thanking President of Azerbaijan Aliyev, Orhan Sancar also expressed his gratitude to Fuad Muradov, Chairman of the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of Azerbaijan, for his support in conveying the process to the relevant authorities and following it up.

Orhan Sancar stated that Aziz Sancar's bond with Azerbaijan is not merely symbolic, noting that Sancar closely followed the 44-day Patriotic War and made efforts to ensure Azerbaijan's voice was heard by the world.

Sancar visited Shusha with a delegation in 2021 and also made a donation to the account opened for the education of Hatice, who lost her parents in the 2020 attack on Ganja.

Born in the Savur district of Mardin, Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Tomas Lindahl and Paul Modrich for his work on DNA repair mechanisms.
