Significant 'ban' on Israel from EU member Slovenia: It becomes the first country

In a statement issued by the Slovenian government, it was stated, "Slovenia is the first European country to ban the import, export, and transit of arms with Israel."

Stating that they acted independently because the EU was unable to take concrete measures on this issue due to internal disagreements and divisions, the government pointed out that humanitarian aid is being deliberately blocked in the Gaza Strip and that people are dying as a result.

It was emphasized that taking action for Gaza is the duty of every responsible state.

The government also stated that it has not granted any permits for the export of military weapons and equipment to Israel since October 2023.

ENTRY INTO THE COUNTRY WAS BANNED

In recent weeks, Slovenia achieved another first among EU countries by declaring 2 far-right Israeli ministers "persona non grata." The Slovenian government declared far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, key coalition partners of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as "persona non grata" and banned their entry into the country.

The government had accused the far-right ministers of making statements amounting to genocide and of inciting violence and serious violations of the human rights of Palestinians.

On the other hand, in June 2024, the Slovenian parliament adopted a decree recognizing the state of Palestine, following Ireland, Norway, and Spain.
