Slovak Prime Minister Fico: "We will not provide any more military aid to Ukraine"

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made statements regarding the Russia-Ukraine war in parliament ahead of the European Union Leaders' Summit. Expressing that they support humanitarian and civilian aid to Ukraine, Fico said, "This will be the official policy of my cabinet. We will not provide any more weapons to Ukraine."

"NOT REALISTIC"

Fico stated, "I am in favor of ending hostilities, and I am not interested in what the plan is. The Ukrainians have no role in what the Russians and the Americans agree upon. I want there to be peace. I do not support any of Zelenskyy's plans because they are not realistic."

"I WILL NOT APPROVE SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA"

Emphasizing that the European Union should shift its role from an arms supplier to a mediator, Fico said he would not approve any sanctions against Russia unless their impact on Slovakia is analyzed.

During the elections held in September, Fico had promised to stop Slovakia's military aid to Ukraine, make foreign policy independent, and protect borders from illegal immigrants. European Union leaders will meet in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, to discuss the conflicts between Israel and Palestine and the war between Russia and Ukraine.

THEY WERE ON UKRAINE'S SIDE

Former Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger had announced in February 2022 that 486 air defense missiles and anti-tank weapons, as well as 100 air defense launchers, would be sent to Ukraine. The country had adopted a pro-Ukraine policy in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Slovakia, which was a supporter of Ukraine in the Russian war, has changed its diplomatic course with the newly appointed Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is known as 'pro-Russian'.
