Greece has also introduced a ban on social media use for young people.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that, citing growing anxiety, sleep problems, and the addictive nature of online platforms, a ban taking effect on January 1, 2027, will prohibit children aged 15 and under from accessing social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat.
Mitsotakis stated that the draft law will be submitted to Parliament for approval in the summer months. Saying, "Greece will be among the first countries to undertake such an initiative," Mitsotakis reported that he consulted with parents before making the decision, adding, "However, I am sure this will not be the last. Our goal is to push the European Union in this direction as well."
Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou said that starting January 1, 2027, platforms will be required to restrict users, otherwise they will face fines.
The Greek government had previously banned mobile phones in schools and established parental control platforms to limit screen time for young people.
Australia became the first country to ban social media for children under 16 in December.
